Are you using your phone way too much? It’s possible since most people are social media zombies. I’m the lucky guy who has friends who don’t use their phone so much. I even have a friend who recently deleted her Facebook because she was sick of it. But I have something even more impressive. There’s a guy who takes me to the MMA training sessions and he was recently using an old phone. A phone with buttons instead of a touchscreen. So I asked him if he had lost his smartphone. He told me that he had bought that type of phone because he felt that his phone was killing his productivity but there’s more.
Your phone makes sure that you’re not present in the moment
Is your phone glued to your hands? Well, then you’re extremely fucked. Yes, you’ve read it correctly you’re fucked. Some people died in a car accident because they were texting. How fucked up is that? You weren’t present in the moment and it cost you your life. But it can cost you friendships as well. I hate people who try to multitask. You can’t talk and text at the same time. We all have mixed up a text and a conversation. It’s just something that you can avoid by putting your phone away.
All those things can wait while you’re spending time with others. Still, some people don’t seem to get it. They just seem to find their phone so damn important. Even more important than your friendship. You sound like a damn good friend. Maybe it’s time to realize that there’s a difference between toxic and real friends.
Your phone is a form of escapism
I once wrote a blog about escapism and most people found it confronting. Well, it’s always confronting when you’re facing the consequences of your actions. Some people just can’t handle reality but there are three other things that they can’t handle.
- being bored (how do you even do it?!)
- being alone
- a fight with their girlfriend or loved one
People like to ease their minds so they’ll start using their smartphone when they overstay their welcome. They don’t get that it’ll only be awkward from now on. But they won’t go home because they don’t want to be alone. It’s ridiculous. Or they grab their phone as soon as the other person is going to the bathroom. Just to check if they’re still popular. It just sounds sad, doesn’t it? The herd of social media zombies is getting bigger and bigger.
But what about the third one you ask?
The smartphone and the fight
I noticed that some couples grab their smartphones as soon as they’re in a fight. They just argue and look at their phones as soon as things get uncomfortable. They just stare at their phone while they nod. They’re not present in the moment that’s for sure. Fighting is part of a relationship but it’s extremely unhealthy if you’re stacking up all the unresolved fights. Let your ego go, drop the phone and talk about it. That’s what adults do. There are already enough people who hate their ex(es).
Conclusion
The smartphone has become a big part of our lives. I admit that it’s easy to have a camera, mp3 and GPS all in one but that doesn’t mean that the damn thing should be glued to your hands. Focus more on your friends instead of your phone and you’ll notice that you’ll have a lot more fun conversation. I mean it’s pretty boring to talk about what others post on Facebook or Instagram, isn’t it? I noticed that this is people’s most favorite topic. Stop focusing on others and start focusing on what matters.
Being a part of the walking dead is something that you’ll regret as soon as you’re on your death bed.
