4 Fights, 4 Months, and the Myth of Sacrifice

On December 24th, I had my fourth fight in four months since switching gyms—a milestone I’d been chasing for years. This fight was special, not just for the win but for everything that came with it.

I’ve talked before about the art of taking breaks for optimal performance and how external stress can affect recovery from training. This fight camp brought those lessons into sharp focus. During the hardest training week and the weight cut, unexpected life events added stress. It’s the kind of stress that doesn’t just go away—you either deal with it after the fight and ignore it for a bit, deal with it instantly, or let it consume you. The latter option is obviously the worst one.

Here’s the thing: not all stress can be postponed. Some are unavoidable, and learning to recognize which stresses are worth ignoring takes experience. It’s why many fighters isolate themselves during camp. Life will throw curveballs, but you don’t have to swing at every one.

Winning fights isn’t just about skill in the ring—it’s about the mindset as well. Fast forward to fight night. The fight before was a mismatch that ended in 25 seconds, so I knew this opponent would be stronger and ready to go. I wasn’t wrong. His first kick surprised me—he hit hard for a 144-pounder. And he came to fight, which made me really happy. But after feeling him out, I finished him with a left elbow in the first round. (You can watch the full fight and finish here.)

And that brings me to the second part:

The illusion of sacrifices.

This fight happened over the holidays, and my weight cut landed on my birthday, December 21st. Some people found it “sad” that I couldn’t eat cake or celebrate with a feast. But honestly? It wasn’t a big deal. Cake can be eaten on any other day. For me, it’s burgers—and ironically, I didn’t even eat one after the fight. Not on fight day, not in the days after.

People who whine about these “sacrifices” need to ask themselves what they really want. Do you want to be a fighter and make weight, or do you want to sit around feeling sorry for yourself because you couldn’t have cake on your birthday? This whole “feel sorry for me” culture has become its own subgenre on social media, and frankly, it’s quite pathetic.

When you’re committed to something, skipping cake or celebrations isn’t deprivation—it shouldn’t be on your mind in the first place. It’s knowing what matters most and choosing it without hesitation. Every fight teaches you something. This one taught me how to block out unnecessary distractions and focus on what matters. Sacrifices aren’t sacrifices when they align with your goals—they’re just part of the process.

Talking about sacrifices brings me to another point: pulling out of fights. Next week, I’ll dive into another tough decision fighters face: knowing when to pull out and why it’s sometimes the most important choice of all.
