I’m not anti-fun! I’m anti- escapism.

fun

I’m not anti-fun! Well, I officially sound like a 50-year-old with a giant midlife crisis who raises two teenagers. Damn, that wasn’t on my goal list. I’m 25 and don’t want to face a midlife crisis. But I’m not anti-fun and this is for real. I just don’t like it when people use fun as a way to escape their reality. People seem to misinterpret this. They assume that I never have fun. Most people assume that I’m always training or blogging. I indeed do this the majority of the time. But does that turn me into a boring person?! Why aren’t you curious instead of judgemental?! But I’m not here to convince you that I’m fun. The reasons why are pretty obvious. First of all, I don’t care what you think of me. Second of all, the concept of fun is bound to your perception of it.

We might have different perceptions of the word fun. Anyways, I’m not anti-fun! I’m anti- escapism. Let’s get into it.

I’m not anti-fun! I’m anti- escapism.

There was a post where I shared my vision of how “adults” behave this day. One of the comments was the I was critical towards society. This is true, to be honest. It was critical but other people had a different take on it. They told me that I was anti-fun because I was critical towards people who party every weekend. Well, there’s some truth in this but only if they do it to escape their reality. The same goes for the overuse of your smartphone, the abuse of excuses and so on. There are tons of ways to escape reality. But that’s something that people don’t want to admit. It’s hard to admit that you’re stuck in a job, relationship or just in life in general. The sad part is that you can’t fix the issue if you don’t admit it.

Because you can’t work on something if you completely avoid and deny the problem. So going out to escape all of that is a no go to me! Fix the damn problem. It’s okay to admit that you’ve fucked up. It’s the best way to restart your life!

I’m not anti-fun! I’m anti- escapism.

But I can enjoy a party if there’s a reason to party. For example, I was invited to a wedding of friends and stayed until 5 in the morning. I just don’t need to do it every single weekend. I was happy and sober. Which brings me to another fun topic. I’m sober for 2 years now, I wasn’t an alcoholic but I used alcohol in the past to escape the demons in my head. Those demons caught up of course. Eventually, I conquered the demons but I was still drinking in moderation from time to time. 2 years ago I traveled with friends to Mallorca and I stopped drinking in a club. Yes, you’ve read it correctly, I stopped drinking while I was going out.

I suddenly realized that I was happy and linked alcohol to escape my problems. I wasn’t unhappy so I didn’t need alcohol. But something weird occurred. People couldn’t handle it at first. They pushed me to drink and called me anti-fun (read more about it here). Weird right?

That’s the thing. Sometimes you make choices that make your life better and people will judge you. They don’t care why you do it. They don’t care that you’re happy. There will be no questions asked. They just want you to be like them. They think it’s bad that you’re different and you’ll soon realize that they have so many things to escape from and you don’t.

I’m not anti-fun! I’m anti- escapism.

I don’t judge that you like to get drunk on your birthday or other occasions.

Even I enjoy a Cuban cigar from time to time.

I don’t judge the fact that you like to work tons of overtime to get a promotion.

The main takeaway is simple: I never judge people. Do whatever you like but make sure that you like it instead of using it as a way to escape your reality. That’s bad for your mental health. That will slowly kill you.

Somebody once told me that the little things count in life.

That person was completely right. The little things add up over time.
